As the 2017/18 premier league season draws near and the ‘Big Boys’ in the league are strengthening their squads, I’ll be giving a prediction on the teams that will potentially finish in the top four. The teams are arranged in no particular order.
Arsenal
The gunners missed out on Champions league football for the first time since Arsene Wenger took over at the club. They have so far made a statement by breaking the clubs’ transfer record to bring in French striker Alexandre Lacazette for £52 million and got Left back Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer from the Bundesliga, the club are also negotiating a deal with Monaco for young French winger Thomas Lemar who could really add something to the team. The Arsenal squad seems to have a lot of quality at the moment and that little bit of experience and leadership that they seem to have lacked in recent years, if they can keep hold of their important players [Sanchez] and let go of the squad players who are not needed they should be able to have a real go at the title or at least get a Champions league slot, that is if they don’t win the Europa League.
Chelsea
The defending champions will no doubt have a tough job trying to retain their title but with the top quality additions (Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Morata) they’ve made to an already strong team, they are pretty much still the team to beat though they are on the verge of letting their top scorer in the past season Diego Costa go.
Manchester United
When you look at the Man Utd team of last season on paper, one would wonder why they finished sixth in the league last term. Moving on, Jose Mourinho has added some much needed steel to the united defence and the team poses a real goal scoring threat in Romelu Lukaku who will have enough to feed on thanks to the wealth of creative midfielders that the Red Devils have in their books. If the gaffer can find the right system and combination of players for the coming season, United will be firing on all cylinders and be rest assured that David De Gea is lying between the sticks and always ready to save the day.
Manchester City
Pep Guardiola endured a difficult first season in charge at Manchester City but still managed to finish third in the league. Looking into the new season, Manchester City are looking as deadly as ever. They have arguably the best attack in the league and can unlock any defence but where the problem lies is in their own defence. Without influential captain Vincent Kompany, the city defence always looked in total shambles. Their defenders tend to focus on attacking rather than stop the opposition from penetrating their own firewall. If Guardiola can find his best team early in the season (which he never did last season), we are in for a treat of beautiful attacking football.
Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton will also be contenders in the upcoming season but the team from North London don’t seem to have the cutting edge to challenge the big boys next term and they haven’t made any notable signings which will have a negative effect on the team considering their involvement in the UCL. The Reds (Liverpool) on the other hand, have a lot of attacking quality but no security at the back, they always try to outscore teams (which worked to an extent last season) but it won’t do them a lot of good this term as their main rival pose serious goal scoring threats. Everton have always been freelancers and the loss of their talismanic striker will surely be felt so I think they will just settle for a Europa league place.
The teams are still conducting their business in the transfer market which means situations might change at some clubs and as the season unfolds we will see which team emerges as the best team in England.
