2023 was such a year, interesting with ups and downs in and out of sports. Before the crux of the matter, I hope we have all had a wonderful start to the year 2024? I was barely here because I was experimenting on posting poems every Sunday on WhatsApp (SORRY). It was well accepted though, if I say so myself.
This is coming a tad bit late, and I sorry but please see below my top sporting moments of 2023:
23. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts made history as the first two black quarterbacks to start in a Super Bowl. Hurts’ Philly won but Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP.
22. Asisat Oshoala’s 4th consecutive Africa best player award
21. D’Tigress’ 4th consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tourney win
20. Australia’s ICC Cricket World Cup success over India
19. Ronnie O’Sullivan’s UK Championship win over Ding Junhui. It was O’Sullivan’s eight time of winning the Snooker Championship
18. Europe’s Ryder Cup win over the U.S.A
17. Sha’ Carri Richardson’s 100m success ahead of Shericka Jackson and 5-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary
16. Max Verstappen’s 3rd consecutive Formula 1 title win
15. LA Lakers winning the first ever in-season NBA tournament. They beat the Indiana Pacers 123:109
14. Lionel Messi’s move from P.S.G to Inter Miami
13. After being detained in Russia for close to 300 days, Brittney Griner returned to the WNBA. She was released in a prison swap
12. The Las Vegas Aces win their second consecutive WNBA title
11. Carlo Alcaraz’ Wimbledon Open (Grand Slam) triumph
10. Coco Gauff US Open (first Grand Slam) win
9. Victor Wembanyama being drafted by the San Antonio Spurs
8. Novak Djokovic’s treble Grand Slam success (Australian, French and US Open)
7. Victor Osimhen’s being crowned best player in Africa
6. Lionel Messi’s Ballon D’or win
5. Denver Nuggets first ever NBA success
4. Manchester United’s League Cup win (first trophy in 6 years)
3. Spain’s female National Team World Cup triumph
2. Lebron breaking the NBA scoring record
1. Manchester City’s treble (EPL, FA Cup and UCL) win
There you have it, my top sporting moments of the past year (2023). I was so happy for Coco Gauff and glad Novak Djokovic closed out the year as World Number and also has the most Grand Slams as at now. I hope he wins the Australian Open and 4 more before he retires.
Have a prosperous 2024 y’all. GOD Bless
