A Disclaimer: Please do not have my head for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I may not know what I am talking about.
So I honestly have not seen the Oscars also known as The Academy Awards in a while, recorded or live and it’s not a deliberate thing. I am not a movie buff as I watch movies based on characters I like. So essentially if I don’t like the main character or if I don’t fancy any of the characters in a flick I don’t think there’s anything anybody can do to make me watch it.
I still haven’t forgiven my mum for making me watch “Guess who’s coming to dinner”, a movie that featured Sidney Portier who later went on to win an Oscar in the best Supporting Role for his efforts.

So I decided to watch Chris Rock’s opening monologue for the 88th Oscars which held in 2016. He started by saying ‘I am here at The Academy Awards also known as the White People Awards’ and immediately it occurred to me it was the Awards which Black Actors decided to boycott because no black actor was nominated the previous year. I however noticed Kevin Hart and Denzel Washington were present at this 2016 Awards. #JustSaying.
Fast forward to 2018, the supposed movie of the year was released and it was the superhero movie titled Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/ Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyongo’o , Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker to mention a few. To put it simply it was majorly an all black cast including the director and writers. Now I won’t fall into the trap of saying it was a wholly black crew but hey the movie turned out to be the biggest movie of last year grossing over $1.3bn (1 Billion Three Hundred and Forty Seven Million Dollars according to Wikipedia) with a $200m budget.

Now none of the characters in the Black Panther flick were nominated for an Oscar and what really piqued my interest in this year’s Oscars was that I noticed that all my friends raving about The Black Panther movie acted like nothing happened, like the movie didn’t exist. Yes the movie got nominated for best Picture and in a couple of other categories but not in the best actor/actress or supporting actor/actress roles. Are we back to this All White Oscar thing? I digress.
I hope Mahershala Ali (Best Supporting Actor in Green Book), Regina King (Best Supporting Actress in If Beale Street Could Talk) and Spike Lee (Best Director for BlacKkKlansman) win an Oscar in the various roles they have been nominated in but truth be told I would love Bradley Cooper to win the Award for Best Actor for his part in A Star is Born which featured Lady Gaga.

I didn’t watch Black Panther, never had and never will. It was all hype if you asked me, yes I shouldn’t have an opinion because I didn’t watch it, but you that saw it 3 times at Ozone or Genesis who your opinion help? Anyway if the first born of Hollywood (Tom Cruise) has never won the coveted award, not that I am a fan of his then who’s Chadwick Boseman?
In the final analysis, what do I KNOW?
CHEERS!!!
