Germany Devour Brazil 7-1 in World Cup Semifinal

It was annihilation, scratch that it was total destruction. I have not ‘seen’ a World Cup game with such score line since Russia beat Cameroun 6-1 at the USA ’94 World Cup where Oleg Salenko scored 5 goals for Russia in that particular game. I have never seen a top ranked team beaten, battered and brushed like Brazil was last night. Like in Nas’ Ether song “they were left for dead, dissed and forgotten. Luck ran out”. Germany didn’t take no prisoners, it was like watching a comedy movie at some point. After the 3rd goal it was clear what Brazil needed to have done and that was to have employed a damage limitation approach but they felt they could come back against a spirited Germany.
Brazil started the game brimming with confidence and it looked like they were going to get that solitary goal I predicted they would score (remember I predicted 1-0 the other day in favour of Brazil?). The Brazilians soft-pedaled on the initial adrenaline rush for about 20 seconds and from then on it was Germany all the way. Germany took the lead in the 11th minute through Thomas Mueller, it was the 24 year old’s 5th goal of the tournament. Miroslav Klose scored Germany’s 2nd in the 23rd minute to earn him the legendary status of being the World Cup’s all-time top scorer with 16 goals. Klose’s goal puts him one goal ahead of Brazilian legend Ronaldo Luis Nazario De Lima who scored 15goals in 4 World Cup tournaments (1994, 1998, 2002 & 2006) playing 19 games in all. Ronaldo however didn’t kick a ball in 1994 as he went to the tournament as a 17 and could never have benched Romario or Bebeto at the time. Klose however needed 21 games to beat Ronaldo’s goal tally and what a way to have done it, right in front of the Brazilian legend himself (Ronaldo) and on Brazilian soil.
Germany went on to score in the 24th, 26th (Toni Kroos) and 29th (Sami Khedira) minute to wrap up the first half with a 5-0 score line. I didn’t even expect the Brazilians to turn up for the second half, but they did. The Brazilians started the second half as they did the first and had chances to at least get a couple of goals. The Germans then took control again and after a while the German coach Joachim Loew decided to shake things up a bit taking off Miroslav Klose and bringing on Andre Schuerrle in the 58th minute. Schuerrle however scored a brace in the 69th and 79th minute to increase Germany’s lead to 7-0. Brazil got a consolatory goal in the 90th minute through Oscar who obviously was anonymous all game long.
The game ended 7-1 and Germany make it to their first final in 12 years with 4 consecutive semifinal appearances. They meet the winner of tonight’s second semifinal game between Argentina and Netherlands on Sunday night. I got bored at some point watching the game and if you noticed after a while the Germans stopped celebrating their goals. This is going to be a game the Brazilians will like to forget in a hurry but trust the World to always rub it in. Be sure Brazil’s Dante would be rewarded handsomely by Bayern Munich for allowing the Germans easy access to their goal while PSG would be searching for the receipt handed to them by Chelsea for the sale of David Luiz hoping to return him back to London. Marcelo was the only stand out Brazilian on the night. The whole German squad deserve a mention but Manuel Neuer the goalkeeper was my man of the match despite not doing too much. I chose him because I was confused on which outfield player to pick. Thomas Mueller is already the man to watch at the next World Cup holding in Russia. He has scored 10 goals in 13 World cup games (2010 & 2014) already and he’s just 24. He still has at least two tournaments to go barring injuries and I strongly believe he’s going to be all-time top scorer in World Cup history come Qatar 2022.
Conclusion
Brazil’s disgrace means we can’t have an all South American final but there’s still a possibility of an all European final if Netherlands conquer Argentina tonight. As usual I will share my thoughts on the game. I see the game ending in a draw at the end of regulation time but what happens afterwards I still cannot guarantee. Did you notice the semifinal games pitched two sportswear (Adidas and Nike) manufacturing giants up against each other? One Nike team (Brazil) is out and would be playing in the loser’s final on Saturday while one Adidas team (Germany) is already through to the final. Will the other Nike team (Netherlands) step up and cruise into the final or will Adidas (Argentina) take the day? We would find out tonight.
