Despite the upset the Germans received from Mexico on Sunday evening, I didn’t learn and still tipped Brazil to annihilate Switzerland. Ginto my guy also warned me about this but I just thought Neymar would come through with the goods for Brazil.
Mexico beat Germany 1-0 in a game they truly deserved to win by a wider margin against the defending Champions, and with the way they played I was praying the chances they missed wouldn’t come back to haunt them.
Brazil Vs Switzerland
Brazil is one of the teams I am rooting for at this tourney and I didn’t expect Switzerland to cause any problems for the Samba boys. I thought wrong, the Swiss army were resilient. Brazil got a goal in the 20th minute through Phillipe Coutinho and I thought the flood gate of goals were opened for the Samba boys.
The Swiss lads kept pushing for an equalizer and were rewarded with a goal in the 50th minute(Zuber Steven). It could be Serbia’s win over Costa Rica that made Switzerland slug it out with Brazil on the night but still this is Brazil, the best team in the World and they are still serious contenders for the trophy.
Neymar Junior was expected to be the main man for Brazil but did not turn up on the night.
The game ended 1-1 which means Serbia sits pretty atop Group E after beating Costa Rica.
England Vs Tunisia
The Three Lions of England is the team with whom I am well pleased. I am not expecting much from the 23 man squad that Gareth Southgate picked for this tourney but I am still a fan. I have even gone as far as predicting a quarter final berth for them as the best they would do at the World Cup. They faced a Tunisian side that’s the highest ranked African side in the world and I told my close friends the worst that could happen to England in this game was getting a draw. England would definitely make it to the 2nd round with Belgium from group G.
The first 10 minutes of the game confirmed to me that the worse that could happen was what I had predicted, a draw. In the 11th minute England took the lead through captain Harry Kane. It looked like it was going one way until English defender Kyle Walker was hit with a moment of madness. He struck a Tunisian player in the face which led to a penalty that was put away in the 35th minute to level scores at 1 all.
It was looking like Tunisia would be giving Africa a glimmer of hope by being the first African team not to lose their opening match so far at the tourney. Seems we have to wait for Senegal to do Africa proud as Harry Kane said no by bagging the winner for the 3 Lions of England in the first minute of extra time.
Thanks for your time. I will return with my World Cup diary after the France versus Peru game. Bless!!!
