The fear of the giant killers got me shook just before the kick off of this game and a minute’s reflection on how Mexico beat Brazil to win the Olympic Soccer Gold at the 2012 Olympic Games in London made matters worse. I could be superstitious when it comes to football especially when it comes to teams I am attached to. Of the 4 teams I have been rooting for at the Russia 2018 World Cup, Nigeria was the only one not to make it to the 2nd round. A Brazil elimination at this stage will reduce the chances of any of the 3 remaining teams (Brazil, France and England) I support in winning the trophy. France had scaled through to the quarter final beating Argentina and this was the only glimmer of hope I had in Brazil scaling the Mexican hurdle.
France had not been convincing at the tourney but the game against Argentina despite a 4-3 scoreline in the French team’s favour still brought out the best in them especially when they were 2-1 down. So I expected the Selecao to follow suit against Mexico and get the job done. The first half was barren ending goalless but the Brazilians showed glimpses of why they were one of favourites for the title.
Willian was the only spark for Brazil in this game and his burst through the Mexican bodies before setting up Neymar Junior in the 51st minute to poke home for the Brazilians to take the lead was a move to watch over and over. 1-0 and it was looking like a riot because Willian was not letting the Mexicans breathe easy with his runs all over the pitch. If there was one who deserved a goal in the game , it sure was Willian.
Brazil got the much desired 2nd goal through substitute Firmino to book a place in the quarter final against Belgium or Japan who play later tonight.
I have Brazil and France in the quarter finals as I await England to join them though it would not be easy against Colombia who have the trio of Quintero, Cuadrado and James Rodriquez(if he plays) to contend with.
Thanks for your time guys, see you tomorrow. BLESS!!!
