Yea I know I put a question mark on the post’s title. But seriously did Milan stun Barca? I didn’t see it that way because both sides have a combined 11 Champions league trophy between them with Milan victorious on 7 occasions and Barca winning it 4 times. It’s not that I predicted A.C Milan would beat Barcelona in last night’s round of 16 game but I also didn’t say Barca would beat Milan. A friend asked me to support Milan, like that would make a difference and I told him they could both lose for all I care. He pestered me to pick a winner and all I said was I liked El-Sharawy. Did that pass for a prediction? I think so, hahahahaha. The game ended 2-0 in Milan’s favour. The biggest winner on the night wasn’t however the Milan team or their fans, it was my friend who won N5, 000 worth of airtime. He had a bet with a Barca fan, the dude said Barcelona would beat Milan with at least a two goal margin. As we know it the result went the other way round.
I haven’t written Barcelona off because the second leg will be the ultimate decider. In fact the Catalans have a chance of progressing into the quarter finals but with the way the Rossoneris defended yesterday it’s going to be an arduous task. Milan put up a fantastic defensive performance, they always had a man attacking the flight/movement of the ball. The first half was boring no doubt (typical Italian display) and it ended goalless. I regretted not watching the Galatasaray versus Schalke game instead. I didn’t change the channel though as I stuck with the Milan versus Barca game expecting a better second half. I didn’t regret it this time. The Catalans were their usual attacking, possession mising selves while Milan picked up the pieces as expected. Alas “eni ti a ro pe ko le pa ago, o ko ile alarinrin” meaning in this context the side you didn’t expect to get a goal scored. Don’t know if that made sense though but Ghana born Kevin-Prince Boateng gave Milan the lead. A controversial goal because the arm of the Rossoneris defender, Zapata put the ball in Boateng’s path before he scored. Things like this happen and if it was in Barca’s favour they would have gladly accepted the goal too.
The Catalans kept dominating the possession stats and in the process Milan scored a second. A throw in, overhead through ball and top quality passing skills led to the goal. Niang heading the ball to El-sharawy and thank GOD El-sharawy kept his cool to pass the ball to Sulley Muntari who volleyed home. 2 nil in favour of Milan and game over. There was no way Barca would have gotten back into the game even if it went on for an hour more. Barcelona as expected had the bulk of the possession (65% to Milan’s 35%), they also made the most complete passes (662 to Milan 225) but shockingly Milan had 8 attempts (6 on target) compared to Barca’s 6 (2 on target). I don’t even remember seeing Abbiati (Milan’s goalie) make any save but let’s dash Barcelona the 2 shots on target. Milan fans remember the game isn’t over yet and the second leg is in 3 week’s time at the Nou Camp in Barcelona. People please don’t hesitate to watch it.
My players of the big night were Milan players; Riccardo Montolivo (he was world class), Massimo Ambrossini (played like a boss) and Giampaolo Pazzini was also impressive. I didn’t mention Barcelona’s Messi? Did he play? If he was in that game then he must have been camera shy.
