United, City grind out results to keep AMBITIONS alive

Arsenal played out a 1 all draw with Tottenham at the Wembley on the day’s early kick-off and all United needed to do was beat Southampton to reclaim fourth position on the log. Arsenal blew the chance to win the game against Spurs when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed a penalty in the 90th minute, their loss ended up being Manchester United’s gain. 1:1 it ended in Wembley.

Speaking of Manchester United, they played host to Southampton. Both sides had played a 2:2 draw in the reverse fixture. The Red Devils still had injury worries but Marcus Rashford returned to the starting line up playing upfront with Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez. Andreas Pereira started in place of countryman Fred in this one making up the midfield trio that had Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba.
Yann Valery put the Saints ahead in the 26th minute. It was a cracker of a goal. 1:0 the first half ended in Southampton’s favour. In the 53rd minute Andreas Pereira repaid the faith United’s caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had in him by smashing the ball past Angus Gunn in goal for Southampton to level scores at 1:1 before Romelu Lukaku put United 2:1 up 6 minutes later. James Ward-Prowse leveled scores at 2:2 with a well struck free kick and just when it looked like the tie would end in a stalemate, Lukaku struck again in the 89th minute to make scores 3:2 in favour of Manchester United.

United were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute which designated penalty taker Paul Pogba missed. 3:2 the game ended and Manchester United move back up to 4th after spending 6 days in 5th position. All the goals scored in this tie were lovely, if you didn’t watch it please look for the highlights.
Manchester City put the pressure on Liverpool by beating Bournemouth by a lone goal scored by Riyadh Mahrez. Liverpool play Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday. Crystal Palace did their chance of avoiding relegation to the Championship a whole lot of good beating Burnley 3:1 away from home.

Wolverhampton Wanderers continued the push for a Europa League spot when they beat relegation threatened Cardiff City 2:0 at the Molineux. Brighton further worsened bottom side Huddersfield Town’s woes with a 1 nil win.
In the final match of the night, 2 first half goals ensured West Ham got the better of Newcastle United.
Fulham host Chelsea at Craven Cottage and Watford welcome Leicester City to Vicarage Road in Sunday’s other Premier League fixtures.
