It was literally a fantastic day at the office up until a friend sent me an image of burning vehicles which occurred on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway. A tanker had lost balance and hit the ground which led to an explosion that destroyed over 55 cars with lives (no definite figure yet) lost.
I pray the souls of the departed Rest In Peace and their families, friends and loved ones be granted the fortitude to bear the loss.
It was always going to be hard to focus on the football game, despite it involving one of the teams I was rooting for. England (my team) was playing against Belgium in a Group G game where top of the table was up for grabs and necessary. Though the group was done and dusted because Panama and Tunisia had been eliminated but England and Belgium would prefer to play Japan rather than be paired with Colombia in the 2nd round hence the importance of ending top of the group.
Both sides put out a different team baring a few regulars that ensured they qualified for the next round. I thought England was going to nick this one but I was wrong. I was not even really interested in the match because the Lagos tragedy, so I saw it haphazardly.
Belgium won the game 1-0 with a beauty of a goal from Adnan Januzaj, but a player that caught my eye on the night was Youri Tielemans. That dude can ball I would not mind him playing for my beloved Manchester United.
In the game of pride between Panama and Tunisia, Tunisia came out tops with a 2-1 victory.
