Saturday’s Matches
The first game of the weekend was the early kick off between Burnley and Man United with both sides searching for their first wins. The game was played at Turf Moor, the home ground of Burnley. Man Utd’s record signing Angel Di Maria made his debut and was on the pitch for about 70 minutes and quite frankly he had a wonderful 1st half creating chances and showing a glimpse of last season’s form. The game ended 0-0 leaving United with 2 points from a possible 9 after 3 games. A terrible start to Louis Van Gaal’s reign as Manchester United’s Manager.
Man City were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City and what a goal it was. A solo effort by Mame Diouf who used to play for Man City’s rivals Man United capped a wonderful afternoon at the Ethihad. I guess Man United fans would have been happy with that result. Newcastle played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace at the Sports Direct Arena. A 1st minute goal from Dwight Gayle put Palace ahead before Daryl Janmaat equalized in the 36th minute. Crystal Palace restored their lead in the 48th minute through Jason Puncheon but Newcastle knocked themselves back into contention in the 72nd minute from a finish by Rolando Aarons. The Tyne side took the lead for the first time in the game in the 88th minute through Mike Williamson before Man Utd’s Wilfred Zaha who’s on loan at Palace till end of the season put the game level in the 95th minute to end the game 3-3.
QPR got their first win of the season beating Sunderland 1-0 with Charlie Austin converting in the injury time of the 1st half and Swansea continued their good start beating Westbrom 3-0 with a 5 star display from Nathan Dyer who bagged a brace and Wayne Routledge scored the other goal. Southampton also recorded their first league win beating Westham 3-1. Mark Noble scored the Hammer’s only goal before Morgan Schneiderlin’s brace and Graziano Pelle’s goal settled the game in Southampton’s favour.
The game of the day had to be the Everton versus Chelsea game at Goodison Park, home of the Merseyside team (Everton). Diego Costa showed again why he was worth every penny (well at least for now) scoring the 1st and 6th Chelsea goals in the 6-3 win over the Toffees. Branislav Ivanovic, an own goal from Seamus Coleman, Nemanja Matic, Ramires made up the other Chelsea goals while Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and former Chelsea player Samuel Eto’o scored Everton’s goals.
Sunday’s Games
Super Sunday wasn’t so super in my opinion but it was sure worth it because of the boredom that engulfed my surroundings. The first game saw Tottenham Hotspurs play host to Liverpool at White Hart Lane. Liverpool parading new signing Mario Balotelli ghosted past Spurs with a 3 nil victory. Goals from Raheem Sterling, a Stevie Gerard penalty and Alberto Moreno ensure Liverpool aren’t too far off in the title race.
The other game played simultaneously with the Liverpool versus Spurs game was the matchup between Aston Villa and Hull City. Villa took all 3 points in this game beating Hull 2-1. Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the Villains’ first goal, his first home goal since December, 2013 before Andreas Weimann netted the second goal. Nikita Jelavic was credited with Hull’s goal after it looked like his header deflected of a Villa defender. Villa are now 3rd on the log. Arsenal failed to beat a determined Leicester City side in what was the last EPL game of the day. Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw after going ahead through new signing Alexis Sanchez. Ulloa brought the Foxes on level terms.
Chelsea and Swansea are the only teams with a 100% record in the league. The transfer window closes today and rumors have been flying about. Man Utd have however secured the signing of Radomel Falcao from Monaco on a year long loan deal and have also acquired the services of Daley Blind from Ajax but rumour has it that they are still in the running to sign William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon and Nigel De Jong of A.C Milan. Arsenal have also been linked to sign Ibrahimovic in the strangest of all rumours I have heard, but hey word has it that Le Professor is in Rome to officiate a game. I am tired of all these stories, so can the day end already? Meanwhile Chelsea have wrapped up the purchase of Loic Remy, Lassana Diarra has joined QPR and Alex Song has signed a year long loan deal with Westham from Barcelona. By 12:01am tomorrow we will know what deals were done and those that weren’t.
