Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (OGS) started his reign in charge of Manchester United with a game against Cardiff City and it ended in a 5-1 victory for the Red Devils. People were quick to say it was Cardiff and were naturally not a match for Man Utd. After United won 4 straight games against Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Reading (FA Cup) and the same story brewed. They said the listed teams were not serious opposition and that Tottenham would teach Manchester United football lessons.
The day came, Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester United. The venue was Wembley Stadium and yes Spurs, the hosts were favorites on the day and yes they hammered or beat United at the Theater of Dreams in August 2018. I choose hammered because a 3 nil bashing is an embarrassment for a team like Man Utd.
I must say I didn’t believe the lads were not playing for Jose Mourinho when the Portuguese was at helm for United but I won’t go into details of why it didn’t make sense to me when he was at Chelsea and why it still didn’t make sense too when he was with the Red Devils. Yes I am a big Mourinho fan and maybe he didn’t grow with the trend of football management. Did we question his abilities when he won the Community Shield, Carabao Cup and Europa League? I digress.
Back to the present, Manchester United have now started attacking well and maybe not firing on all cylinders but there has been a difference since OGS took over. Tottenham have been indecent form of late winning 4 of their last 5 games but in the form books United trumped that performance with 5 wins in 5 games but on a day like this you aren’t far from the truth if you say the form book would thrown out of the window.
The game got underway and trust me Tottenham dominated, which was not new. They came close to taking the lead in the 9th minute but Harry Winks miscued sending the ball wide. United’s top scorer Anthony Martial also came close to giving his team the lead in the 19th minute but Hugo Lloris in goal for Spurs was a able to steer the ball off his goal for a United corner. From this moment it was one way riot, Tottenham bullied United having most of the ball.
In the 44th minute, Paul Pogba showed why he was worth £89m (Eighty Nine Million Pounds) putting Marcus Rashford through on goal. The young Englishman didn’t hesitate to put the ball past Lloris. Boom, GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL !!!
First half ended 1:0 in United’s favour. The Red Devils had goalkeeper David De Gea to thank for some wonderful saves.
Spurs picked up from where they stopped in terms of dominating possession, creating chance after chance but there was one obstacle faced. It was David De Gea, the Spanish goalkeeper made saves he had no business making and without exaggerating Spurs should have at least gotten 3 goals in the second half alone. Despite all the dominance and wonderful display, Tottenham did not make anything of it.
Game over 1:0 in United’s favor, and you thought De Gea had a good first half then he had a superb second.
Thanks for your time guys, do have a FABULOUS WEEK!!!
