The Euro 2020 football tourney has started well for me except for the Christian Eriksen situation but it is good to hear he’s getting better as each day passes by. Again I am rooting for England, Portugal and France. England is a team that I have been following for about 19 years of my life, Portugal because the best player of the last 20 years; Cristiano Ronaldo plays for them (you can argue with your keypad) and France just for the fun of it though I was a big fan of Eric Cantona, Zinedine Zidane and David Trezeguet.
All of these teams won their first group games at the Euros with England beating 2018 world cup finalists Croatia by a lone goal scored by Raheem Sterling. It was sweet revenge for the 3 Lions of England after losing to the Croats 2:1 at the semi-final of the Russia 2018 tourney. Portugal scored 3 late goals 2 of whom were scored by Cristiano Ronaldo to beat Hungary 3:0 and sit atop the Group of Death (Group F). Group F also houses reigning world champions France and Germany.
Ronaldo’s brace took him past Michel Platini whom they both share the record of most goals scored by a player at the European Nations Cup. They both had 9 goals before today’s game. Now Ronaldo has 11 goals and looks like he would add to that tally as he chases Iran’s Ali Daei record of 109 national team goals. Ronaldo is close with 106 goals.
In the biggest game of the tournament, France picked up all 3 points on offer against a toothless German side thanks to a Matt Hummels own goal. It was good to see Karim Benzema back with the French National team though his goal was ruled offside, he should take solace in the 3 points Les Bleus left Munich with.
Watch out for my 3 Lions on Friday when they face Scotland by 8 pm. This is some sort of a derby match or should I say a Premier League match.
CHEERS!!!
