Earlier today Nigeria played Cameroon in a friendly game which was played in Austria. The first Super Eagles game I saw was coincidentally against Cameroon, it was the Senegal ’92 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 3rd place match. I didn’t watch the game live as I saw it years after but it was the game that made me love the late Rashidi Yekini. Nigeria won the game 2:1 with Yekini scoring the winning goal, a goal I will never forget. It was pure class.
After the 1992 fixture, Nigeria had locked horns with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 6 times excluding today’s tie losing only once and that was a very painful loss because it was in the AFCON final which Nigeria co-hosted with Ghana. Nigeria missed the opportunity to lift the trophy in front of the fans as the final was played at the National Stadium in Lagos. The game ended 2:2 in regulations time only for the Super Eagles to lose the game via penalties.
I wasn’t interested in today’s game, though I was confident the Eagles would win. I decided to watch Spain take on Portugal instead.
I didn’t even know a single player in Cameroon’s squad. Anyway, Cameroon won the game to claim their first win over Nigeria for the first time in 21 years.
CHEERS!!!
