A thrilling encounter and this time Ronaldo clearly was ahead of Messi in this game. Asides the brace which the Portuguese scored, he was also visible on the pitch. The team adjudged to be the best in the world were bashed a second time in 7 days. I hardly watch Barcelona play because there’s no chance of them losing. So sad I didn’t watch their loss to Celtic last year in the Champions league (CL). I have seen this Barca team play three times this season; the 1st leg of the Copa Del Rey against Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and it ended 1-1. Barcelona outclassed the Los Merengues in that game and should have won. The second Barca game I saw was the CL match against 7 time champions A.C Milan which they lost 2-0. They out passed Milan in this tie but the end result mattered and the Rosseneris take a 2 nil advantage to Spain in 2weeks time. And the third Barcelona game I saw was last night’s 3-1 bashing received from Real Madrid in the 2nd leg of the Copa Del Rey.
Madrid are now through to the Copa Del Rey final with a 4-2 aggregate win over their arch rivals and they will face either Sevilla or Athletico Madrid who play later tonight. Losing to Madrid isn’t new but being outclassed? That’s a first since the Pep Guardiola revolution. I hardly noticed Messi in last night’s game except when he nearly scored from a free kick in the 13th minute and I think the absence of Tito Vilanova (Barca’s head coach) is a major reason why the Catalans are under-performing. I know they have won 5, drawn 2 and lost 2 since Vilanova resumed treatment for cancer in New York but two (against Sevilla and Granada) of the five victories were not so convincing.
Angelo Di Maria’s performance last night in one word? That’s a tough one but let me use “outlandish”. I hope that’s okay? Well I chose outlandish because I had never seen him play that well in a Madrid shirt before. It was like as if he was on drugs. He did his job so well that he also had time to help Alvaro Arbeloa with his defensive duties. They both stopped Jordi Alba from bombing forward. Jeez did you the Di Maria move that made Puyol lie face down? That was total disrespect. Di Maria was the obvious man of the match and I am sure he put up that wonderful performance after the rumors of him being sold in the summer became loud. Ronaldo was also in inspirational form last night and Varane has shown you don’t have to be 30 before you can make a name as a center back. Varane scored the third goal for Madrid after Ronaldo’s brace gave the Los Merengues breathing space. Jordi Alba however scored a consolatory goal for Barca.
Another el-classico comes up on Saturday but this time it’s a league game. Madrid can afford to rest players for this tie because they would rather focus on how to knock Man Utd out of the CL. Sir Alex Ferguson was present at last night’s game and I am sure he would be worried after seeing what Madrid can be capable of. Don’t worry Sir Alex, your boys will nick this one.
